Bennigan's and Mervyns file fo bankrutcy protection
Jul 30, 2008

Bennigan's Steak and Ale have closed  their restaurants and filed for bankruptcy protection (cl ick here) was the story as reported in the Wall Street Journal.  The very next day   Mervyns, a department store chain  filed Chapter 11, as reported in USA Today. (click here)

These very well known brands are a victim of the economic backlash impacting companies in these very difficult times.  Only those brands and companies , who have differentiated themselves from their competitors and have established an identified value proposition.

Competitive differentiation which is lasting and enduring will prevail in these turbulent times.  These are two examples where retailers , who have not truly established a unique differentiation felt the pressure and their businesses failed.  The economic downturn was the fin straw.  People are being let go, locations closing , customers are trying alternatives. Those who have been paying attention to how they serve their customers and how they differentiate will get through these difficult times hurt, but perhaps not crippled.

Sadly, Bennigan's and Mervyns are fatalities.
