Connected, Yes, but Hermetically Sealed

Over the years I have agreed with very little Ben Stein writes or speaks..  His opinions and positions are very opposite of mine in most matters, yet in this past Sunday's New York Times he articulated quite accurately what is happening within our towns, cities and society in general and i agree with him wholeheartedly. He asserts quite accurately how "connected" we are to the inanimate objects that cling to our hips or reside in our pockets and pocketbooks.  When they ring, buzz or vibrate we drop everything to see what is the latest buzz, crisis or opportunity that awaits us.  We react, respond and in an instant are onto the next message.  This digital disruption that occurs in some cases hundreds of times a day, produces chaos, interruptions and completely immobilizes our ability to connect in a meaningful personal way, or allow us to see things through and think thoughts as opposed to react and respond. These devices as they are called are divisive in that that continually break our concentration, hamper our ability to focus and minimize our ability to think things through. Our communication techniques have become  controlled by our thumbs. Our mind goes from person to person, subject to subject in an instant.  What has become of our ability to emotionally connect with a person and feel what they feel as opposed to reading what they wrote?
