Yammer is Twitter with a Business Model
Sep 11, 2008

"Yammer is Twitter with a business model. (Read About Them) Created by an existing company, Geni, to scratch its own itch, Yammer takes the familiar Twitter messaging system and applies it to internal corporate communications. There is such a huge demand for this type of service that 10,000 people and 2,000 organizations signed up for the service the first day it launched on Monday. Anyone with a corporate email can sign up and follow other people in their company. But if a company wants to claim its users, and gain administrative control over them, they will have to pay. Itís a brilliant business model. "

So describes the first place winner in the TechCrunch5  (Read Article) recognition of tech start ups that was awarded yesterday.  In previous commentary I expressed concern about social networks and their impact on workplace productivity, but Yammer , by its business model, manages access and hopefully focus. In our book, How you do...What you do we discuss the importance of serving each other within a company. In this context of internal service, communications is critical.  Associates all have similar "soft needs" to be informed, communicated with , heard and responded to. A communications model such as this satisfies those needs.  The challenge that a Yammer type system faces is to control the focus and manage the balance in communications between personal and professional dialog.
