George Jenkins added to the Supermarket News Hall of Fame
Dec 5, 2008

George Jenkins, the founder of Publix Super Markets, is honored as much for  what he did as for how he did it in creating one of the finest Super Market retailing chains in America.  Preceding George into this Hall of Fame last year was another respected retailing pioneer Robert Wegman of Wegmans Supermarkets. Like Bob Wegman,  "Mr. George" as he was called throughout his career, was a true gentleman.

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Jenkins  a few times throughout my Unilever career and he was always a gentleman.  He cared deeply about people whether they were customers or associates.  His treatment of both is legendary and how he did ...what he did laid the foundation for the company founded in 1930 to prosper and thrive 78 years later.  I still read from the book he wrote "50 Years of Pleasure" on the occasion of that significant anniversary.

To get a full appreciation of  just how wonderful this man was and how terrific his company became as a result of his leadership, Read this article
